Fashion at Guist'hau Today

GUIST’HAU TODAY

Caroline
How much money do you spend for clothes in a month?
  •   About 50€ (~71$)
Is fashion important to you in high school?
  •   Yes kinda, but I don’t really care about what people think of me!

Victoire
  •   20€ (~28$)

  •       Yes, because I think you must be presentable in high school, and fashion shows who you really are, your personality. It shouldn’t be a dilemma!

    Antoine
  •   Between 150 and 160€ (210-230$)

  • Fashion is always important, doesn’t matter if you’re at school, or not! I really don’t care about the way people judge me, if I’m dressed this way, it’s for me.

Albane
  •    It depends, from 100 to 150€ (140-210$)

  •    No, not really, even though I love clothes.

                                  Steven         Nolwenn
  •   Her : About 60€ (85$)
     Him : Between 0 and 50€ (0-71$)
  •     I don't care at all!! It really doesn’t matter, it’s really because we have to dress.

 Florian

  •  100€ (~140$)

  •  I like fashion, but I would be able to come to school in sweat pants! I don't care how others see me.

 Ophélie et Charlotte

  • We spend about 500€ a month  (~700$)

  • It's very important for us, we would never come without make-up to school. Every morning, it takes me about 45min to get dressed.

Cooking

Hi !
We're Victoire, Anaëlle and Quittrie, three friends who love cooking, that's why we wanted to show you some French recipes ! French cooking is revered by everyone (we all know that you dream about it). So we have decided to share our experience with you (even if it's quite basic) and to make you become a real « Français » !

Recipe of the « Charlotte » :

500g of strawberries
100g of strawberries for decoration
25cl of milk
35cl of single cream
1 vanilla pod
4 eggs
6 table spoons of sugar
1 tea spoon of maizena (or of starch)
4 gelatin sheets (that is 8g), put soaking into some cold water
1 box of sponge fingers
Whipped spray cream for decoration

Preparation :

Begin by making the side dish of the charlotte :
Stir in the boiling milk and the split vanilla pod, cover and let infuse
Whip egg yolks with 3 table spoons of sugar to obtain a white foam
Incorporate the maizena, then the warm milk
Put back all the ingredients back in the pan and thicken on a low heat, without letting it boil
Remove from the heat, add the pressed gelatin, mixing it so that it dissolves perfectly, then let it cool.
Whip the fresh cream, adding 3 table spoons of sugar in the course of the operation.
Incorporate this whipped cream into the vanilla cream.

Finally, proceed to the assembly of the « charlotte » :

Find a mould for « charlotte » made of plastic film (or aluminium)
Mix the pieces of strawberries in the middle of the cream side of the dish.
Pour ½ of the side dish without the strawberries into the mould, cover with a coat of biscuits, put in the side dish with the strawberries.
Compress the dish slightly using a plate.
Let the charlotte rest in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours.
At the time of serving, turn the charlotte out of the tin and decorate it with the remaining strawberries and with the whipped cream.

NANTES BY NIGHT

Nantes by night is very different from Nantes by day. First of all you don't meet the same people by night. During the day you see all kinds of people whereas by night you see young people especially in groups. They hang out in clubs, bars, or go to gigs. They can hang out with their families too, go to theatres or restaurants.

On March the 25th we went to a gig, "Le Off de Chantenay" This was a rock gig organised by Chantenay's school. Gathering the students bands like :
-Red Lily playing Led Zepplin's songs The Stones, The Beatles...

-"The Crew" (Simon a student of our class is the drummer) even played with Manou, "Elmer food Beat"'s singer.

Of course there was also bad musics, we mean, bands of young teenages who din't know well how to sing, or play an instrument. It wasn't exactly what is usually called music...

Music in Nantes

Hello guys ! We're going to talk about music in Nantes: you are going to discover our bands and our events.

In our first article, we're going to tell you about events.

« Les Folles Journées »: it's a classical music festival created in 1995. Each year, the festival is devoted to different classical composers. In 2011, the theme was « Les Titans »: Brahms, Liszt, Mahler, Strauss.
At the beginning, it just happened in Nantes and lasted two days, whereas now, thanks to its huge success, it also takes place in other cities of our area. Better still, some big cities just like Tokyo, Rio or Bilbao, took the principle for themselves and created their « Folles Journées »

« Couvre-Feu »: It's a Rock, Reggae, Ska, Punk and Metal festival. Created in 2001, it occurs on the last week-end of August, in Corsept, a small city 50 km from Nantes. Its aim is to develop the culture in rural areas.
This year some bands are already confirmed: «  Les Ogres de Barback »(chanson francaise), « Danakil »(reggae) and « Suicidal Tendencies »(punk). The atmosphere is very festive !

« Hellfest »: The Hellfest Summer Open Air is an « extreme music » festival, one of the biggest  Metal festivals in Europe !! Created in 2006, it happens in June lasting three days in Clisson, a small city 30 km away from Nantes.
In 2010, the headliners were Kiss, Alice Cooper or Slayer for example ( it attracted more than 70,000 spectators) and this year, Iggy Pop & the Stooges, Ozzy Osbourne, and Scorpions are already confirmed. Here people enjoy beer !!...
We also can say that there are many debates as people have very different views about the festival, but perhaps they don't know just how festive the atmosphere is !

« Rendez-vous de l'Erdre »: It's a jazz festival wich takes place on the banks of the Erdre, a river which runs through Nantes. So it also takes place in La Chapelle sur Erdre, Sucé sur Erdre, Nort sur Erdre...on the last week-end before the start of school year. It's free and its aim is to make an elitist music style more accessible. Last year, it attracted about 150,000 spectators.

« Hip Opsession »; It's a hip-hop festival created in 2005. It occurs in Nantes and its suburbs during 15 days of events: gigs, dancing shows, training courses or debates...
It attracted about 13,000 spectators last year.

Fashion at Guist'hau

Guist’hau in 1954 and 1968

Between the 50’s and the 60’s, Guist’hau was a boarding school for girls only. The beige overall was compulsory, that’s why fashion didn’t really have a place in high school! As you can see, they wore their hair in a bun, or untied and a bit curly.

Guist'hau in 1977

The May 1968 protest refers to a particular period in French history. During this time, the country saw the largest general strike, resulting in a wave of freedom for the youth. Guist’hau became mixed, and students were allowed to dress however they wanted. At the time, bell-bottomed trousers, huge glasses, striped shirts, shirts with lapels wide enough to land a plane on, and turtle necked sweaters were very in! However fashion remained kind of prudish (no cleavage, or heels). Teens also used to buy second-hand clothes.

Guist’hau in 1983

In 1980, teens let go of their sober outfits in favor of eccentricity, colors and even provocation, inspired by American fashion style : Levi’s 501, sneakers, sweats, Fruit of the Loom…
As for the hair, often untied, very curly and with a boyish hair cut for the girls.
In the 80’s, fashion definitely became more casual.

Guist'hau in 1992

In 1990, American brands were very popular, Nike, Converse, Levi’s… Teens wore a lot of sports clothes, and sports brands (Carhartt, Rip Curl, Quicksilver, Kappa…). They were also really inspired by the looks of French TV shows, such as “Helene et les garcons”, “Premiers baisers”, “Les filles d’à côté”… Which were really popular at the time!
Nowadays, we really make fun of 1990’s fashion style!

Guist'hau in 2000

In 2000, the looks were very drab, sad, colorless… Girls liked cropped shirts, hair parted in the middle, total-look jeans and heavy sweat shirts.
In the next topic, we’ll see fashion in Guist’hau today!

Places & Shops in Nantes

Places & Shops in Nantes

By Inès, Marie-Louise, Paul& Antoine

Hi,
It's not a « Guide Michelin », it's just a list of good ideas to hang out, shop and snack in our beautiful city :  Nantes

Crébillon Street – Royale Square – Graslin Square
(Rue Crébillon – Place Royale – Place Graslin)

All expensive brands are in Rue Crébillon. You can find Kookaï, Sandro, Gérard Darel, Vanina, Minelli, Pablo, Lacoste, Clarisse (where they sell very expensive shoes), Maje, Levi's, Tara Jarmon, Caroll, BCBG Max Azria (Marie-Lou's  favorite American place!), Princesse Tam-Tam, The Kooples, and other ones...
We aren't going to tell you every brand, you have to come here to discover them ! By the way, we know, we know... : France is THE COUNTRY of fashion !

In the same street, you can find Debotté where you can eat very very good pastries ! (Marie-Lou' likes the raspberry pie and Paul likes the macaroons).

On Place Graslin, you can find the Graslin theater and the most popular brasserie in Nantes : La Cigale. On Place Royale, you can find a majestic fountain and a shop where you can eat tasty ice-creams : Amorino (Inès' favourite shop)

Passage Pommeray

It's a very famous old passage in Nantes. We are not going to tell you about its story because another group will do it. You can find all kinds of shops : Clothes, food, stamps....
Our favorite one is Larnicol : What a great shop ! It's a shop where you can buy chocolate in any form that you want !

If you want to see those places and shops, just watch the video !

Calvaire Street ( Rue de Calvaire )

The principal street to do shopping. All young people enjoy hanging out and go there because the prices are cheap : We can find some brands like H&M, Zara, Réserve Naturelle (for cheap jewels but good quality), Naf Naf, André (for shoes), Sephora (for perfumes and make up), Saga (for make up too), Game (for geeks) and other shops to snack.

Galeries Lafayette – Quartier Bouffay
(Bouffay District)

In Bouffay district, you'll see all kinds of restaurants : Italian and Asian ones  (But be careful ! : Chinatown isn't a good restaurant!) , tea shops, bars,.....
You'll come across the Galeries Lafayette where you can shop and find all the trendy brands and clothes but we admit : it's quite expensive.
You can also find good shops if you want to have a snack like Amorino for ice-cream.....

If you want to see those places and shops, just watch the video ! (we will do it soon)

Place Commerce (Commerce Square)

This Place is the main and the most famous Place in Nantes. In the city we sometimes say : « Tous les trams passent par Commerce » or in English : » All the tramways go through Commerce ».  There is the Cinema and the FNAC shop where you can find books,CDs, DVDs, video games.....

L'Île de Versailles (Versailles Island)

It's a special island where you can have a good time. It's a special place in Nantes because there is a garden very different from what garden usually look like. It reminds you of Asian culture with all the trees and the greenery. It's a very quiet place too.

If you want to see those places and shops, just watch the video !

Places where you can eat

When you want to eat something very tasty at dinner for a great occasion or not, you should go to 'La Cigale', it's a very old brasserie where you can eat and drink, it's a little bit expensive but very tasty and when you go there, you are never disappointed.
You can also go to 'Joe Carpa', which is also a brasserie but more modern and design. Its specialties are Carpaccios, and it's less expensive than 'La Cigale'  There is 'Gusto' too but it's very expensive. If you want to eat a good piece of beef, you can go to 'L'Entrecôte'. They cook meat very well and you can choose how you want it done.

Parkour

I hope you enjoy this post by some of our students in 2nde 2!

- Sarah, the English assistant

PARKOUR

Origins :
This activity was created during the nineties in Paris suburbs. A group of friends called the « Yamakasi » invented this sport, inspired by the book « méthode naturelle d’éducation physique » (natural method of physical education) written by George Hebert. The most well-known creators of Parkour are David Belle and Sebastien Foucan.

What does it consist of?
It consists of going from point A to point B as efficiently and as fast as possible. To do so, you have to go through the obstacles (by jumping and doing some acrobatics), not around them.

Different ways to practice :
Some people prefer to be very efficient whereas others like to perform acrobatics and beautiful tricks. This second way to practice Parkour is called Freerun. In theory, Freerun and Parkour are the same sport (this is what the creators said), but in practice there is a real difference between them.

Some moves :
The names of the moves are in French, because English names are not translated word for word, so it’s complicated to translate… (and anyway it is a french sport  so…!)

Saut de chat : It consists in jumping on an obstacle, but you give yourself a boost with your arms by pushing the obstacle with them.

Passe muraille : It consists of going on the top of a high wall by taking a step on it after having jumped. Like that, you can go very high !

Wall flip: (it’s called like that in french) It’s not a real Parkour’s movement, it’s more freerun. Like the « passe muraille », you take a step on a wall, but then you just do a backflip !

A video will come soon !
