Fashion at Guist'hau

Guist’hau in 1954 and 1968

Between the 50’s and the 60’s, Guist’hau was a boarding school for girls only. The beige overall was compulsory, that’s why fashion didn’t really have a place in high school! As you can see, they wore their hair in a bun, or untied and a bit curly.

The May 1968 protest refers to a particular period in French history. During this time, the country saw the largest general strike, resulting in a wave of freedom for the youth. Guist’hau became mixed, and students were allowed to dress however they wanted. At the time, bell-bottomed trousers, huge glasses, striped shirts, shirts with lapels wide enough to land a plane on, and turtle necked sweaters were very in! However fashion remained kind of prudish (no cleavage, or heels). Teens also used to buy second-hand clothes.

In 1980, teens let go of their sober outfits in favor of eccentricity, colors and even provocation, inspired by American fashion style : Levi’s 501, sneakers, sweats, Fruit of the Loom…
As for the hair, often untied, very curly and with a boyish hair cut for the girls.
In the 80’s, fashion definitely became more casual.

In 1990, American brands were very popular, Nike, Converse, Levi’s… Teens wore a lot of sports clothes, and sports brands (Carhartt, Rip Curl, Quicksilver, Kappa…). They were also really inspired by the looks of French TV shows, such as “Helene et les garcons”, “Premiers baisers”, “Les filles d’à côté”… Which were really popular at the time!
Nowadays, we really make fun of 1990’s fashion style!

Guist'hau in 2000

In 2000, the looks were very drab, sad, colorless… Girls liked cropped shirts, hair parted in the middle, total-look jeans and heavy sweat shirts.
In the next topic, we’ll see fashion in Guist’hau today!
